The Material and Background

Carbon is the chemical element of atomic number 6, a non-metal that has two main forms (diamond and graphite) and occurs in impure form in charcoal, soot, and coal. Carbon is essential to all known living systems and without it, life as we know it could not exist.  The uses of carbon and its compounds are extremely varied. One of these is carbon fiber.

When carbon fiber is produced, thousands of thin strands of carbon are twisted together to form a yarn. This yarn is then woven into a flexible fabric that can be molded into many different shapes. A single strand has a diameter of 0.005-0.010 mm, less than a human hair.   It produces a strong, lightweight material used in construction of aircraft, spacecraft, automobiles, and our jewelry.

The jewelry designer of our Carbon Fiber Collection, Diana Hall, lives in the USA and loves the way the material looks when the sun or bright lights shine on it.  She loves the idea of making fine jewelry out of a high-tech material that originates from the most essential element on earth. Its light weight allows her to make some unusual, strong, light pieces that could not be produced with any other material. Using carbon fiber with gold, silver and stones brings a softer feeling to the material. Her personal favorite is the gold-black combination, which almost has a very tribal feel to it. It takes a modern and “cold” material and turns it into something handmade that evokes feeling.
